FAW Car Brand’s History – FAW Logo
Known for selling vehicles from buses to automobiles to light-, medium- and heavy-duty trucks and auto parts, FAW Group Corporation was established in 1953 under the name Firs Automobile Works. FAW Automotive is the first and oldest Chinese automobile manufacturer when it unveiled the Hong Qi, the country’s first domestically manufactured passenger car in 1958.
The company’s first aim was to be a truck manufacturer thus sending a team of Chinese workers to learn the art of truck manufacturing in the Soviet Union. A year after it was established, FAW Automotive produced the four-ton Jie Fang CA-10 truck. A truck inspired by the Russian ZIS-150. With the full support of Soviet Russia, FAW established their first vehicle-manufacturing plant in Changchun—a strategic location chosen by Russia.
In the advent of rolling out the first Chinese passenger vehicle, FAW immediately caught the attention of consumers. However, the first Hong Qi was meant to service the elite since it was meant to be a line of luxury sedans. The Hong Qi remained in full production for over three decades. Seeing the manufacturing plant of FAW, Audi signed a joint venture with the company to manufacture Audi vehicles. The joint venture caught the attention of Chinese state officials thus preferring the FAW Audi vehicles.
In 1992, the company has been renamed from First Automobile Works to China FAW Group Corporation. FAW was one of the first automotive manufacturing companies to sign joint ventures with foreign automakers, in 1990, it entered a joint venture with Volkswagen launching the FAW Automotive as a company with one of the greatest working relationship with a foreign company. With strong joint ventures with Audi and Volkswagen, FAW was able to acquire half of the ownership of Tianjin Automotive Xiali in 2002. This spawned FAW’s scheme to begin the manufacturing of their own passenger vehicle. The company was then renamed as FAW Tianjin. In acquiring the company it ended up entering a joint venture with Toyota. In 2009, it entered another joint venture with General Motors among other companies.
By 2008, the company celebrates the production of more than 1.5 million vehicles and the fact that it was the largest machinery corporation and the second largest vehicle manufacturer in China and about 2.6 million vehicles by 2011.
FAW logo features the ‘winged 1’ emblem created in 1964. This is derived from the Chinese 汽 meaning ‘first’ and 汽車 meaning ‘automobile’. The wings also represent an outspread hawks wings depicting the aggressive approach of FAW automotive in the automaker industry.
